It’s been pretty quiet around here this week, as we’ve been spending time with our families to celebrate Christmas. We wanted to take a moment to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and send you our best wishes for the new year.

2020 has been a very challenging year for many of us, and we wanted to thank each and every one of you for your love and support. Music is so important to each of us, and knowing that the little that we CAN do has been able to bring some light into the lives of our family, friends and fans has made it a little more bearable.

This year has been a roller coaster to say the least! Bliss was on track to have one of our busiest years yet, and at the end of the last gig we played before we were locked down, the band was so tight! Everything seemed to fit together just right, our performance was strong… There’s a high that comes from playing live for all of you, and we were definitely riding it! It was a big shock to us and to our musician friends and colleagues when things came to such an abrupt halt.

I could spend a lot of time talking about all the negative things 2020 brought us. We’ve all struggled with how this pandemic has affected our livelihoods, our day to day lives and our interactions wth family and friends outside of our immediate families. Lots of people were not, and are not, okay. We continue to experience ups and downs with ever changing rules and restrictions, especially during the holidays. I’ve said throughout the year, be kind to each other AND to yourselves. That still holds true now.

As much as it has been challenging, I can think of many positive things that have come from this year. I finally learned how to play my acoustic guitar and I played it - by myself - for people. That was terrifying and exciting all at the same time. But I did it. Did you try something new this year?

As a band, we’ve focused on our sound quality for both live performances and recording. We learned new material, broadcast some live performances and worked on recording material for our website. We had the opportunity to play out in the summertime for some live outdoor events, which were unexpected but we are very grateful for.

A few of our highlights:

Bliss bringing Beats to the Streets - live outdoor shows in our neighbourhoods!

Playing at Drive-Thru Ribfest on Labour Day in support of Rotary Burlington Lakeshore

Finally taking the plunge into original material!

2020 brought us the time and mental capacity to work on original material. Of all the things we accomplished this year, as a band, we learned how to communicate and work together on something we were creating, listening to each others ideas and sharing our opinions.

As a result, we’re expecting to release our first original song later this week. Actually, tomorrow!! I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to do, and can’t wait to share it with you.

Normally I measure a year in the number of gigs we’ve played - you get one blog post per year from me with a recap of what we’ve done and where we’ve been - what exciting things have happened and occasionally, some of the sad things too. If I were to measure 2020 by my normal standard it would be considered quite the failure. But we need to change our mindsets and how we measure our successes, not just for this year but every year. If I didn’t have the friendships that I do, the family that I do, I couldn’t do what I do today. The quality of our relationships and the music has to come first.

We don’t yet know what 2021 will bring, It’s certain that things won’t change much for the first while, so we need to be patient. What I do know is when the time comes to play live music again, I’m ready. Bliss is ready. We cant wait to be with all of you again soon.

Sarah xo
Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/60195152019-12-29T22:00:00-05:002022-04-08T13:56:36-04:002019... One for the record books!
It seemed appropriate that as we approached the end of 2019, we paused for just a moment to reflect. Some people measure time in days, weeks, months... I prefer to measure it by the number of shows that have passed. In this case, 76 gigs. Even when I put that down on paper, it seemed like an unbelievable number to me. I played 76 live shows last year. The vast majority of those were Bliss shows, but I did have the opportunity to sit in with a couple of wonderful local bands, Shake Street and IN2U, to assist them when they needed a singer. I was also honoured to participate in Wine, Women and Song 2019.

Pondering that number, I remember a time in my early days with Now and Then when I needed Jim to stagger the set lists so that I didn't have to sing two difficult songs too close together. We played a live show maybe once or twice a month in those days, and I split lead duties with two wonderful ladies. Even in the early days of Bliss, I had a few such requests. If Sarah then could see Sarah now... I hope she would be inspired!

Not sure what 2020 is going to bring, but we're looking forward to a record year!

Come along with us!

-SN
Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/57280462019-04-22T10:18:10-04:002022-05-11T06:31:46-04:0052 Gigs Later...
So as some of you may have surmised, I’m not very good at this “blogging” thing. Yes, it’s my blog and I can write if I want to, but the original intention of this space was to stay connected with all of you. It’s been 52 gigs since my last post… It seems I’m much better at communicating through the music.

2018 was in a word… awesome. It was a year of growth and exploration musically. Being able to focus exclusively on one band was refreshing. We were able to expand our reach and play new venues and I met a lot of people! Jim and I have always made a point of going out to support the local live music scene whenever we have a chance, and it’s rewarding to meet other musicians and like-minded individuals.

Into the present… April has been an incredibly busy (and incredibly satisfying) month for Bliss. We’ve played a lot, and we continue to see more and more familiar faces come out to hear us. I absolutely love that. The rest of the year is shaping up to be pretty amazing too. (Someone pinch me!)

One of the best things about performing music in a live venue is that I get to share an immediate connection with you. I get to see your reactions to our music from the stage, and once we finish our set, it’s an honour when you share with me how the music has moved you. Breaking the veil between us, performers and audience, is so important. I want you to be a part of this whole thing with us! Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said that “music is the universal language of mankind”. I want to know how it speaks to you. So please, do come and introduce yourself and share with us. We’re everyday people given an extraordinary opportunity to share our gifts with the world. I couldn’t be more blessed.

-SN
Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/50587962018-02-02T17:00:00-05:002022-04-20T02:32:58-04:00How do YOU measure a year?
My husband often reminds me that the only constant in our lives is change. It's been over a year since I put pen to paper here, (fingers to keys, for you technicality sticklers) and there are a lot of reasons that I've been so quiet but the main one is, there was just so MUCH to say that I didn't know where to start. Most of the time, change is for the better but it's sometimes hard to see that in the moment.

So where do I start? We ended 2016 by commencing our search for another drummer to work with the 4-piece, as having only one drummer who also plays in another band was tricky for booking gigs. We all have work and home lives to balance too, so too much gigging is not necessarily a good thing! Meet Paul - local drummer, long-time friend of Brian and owner of udrum (for all your custom drum needs!), who agreed to come and jam with us and work the occasional gig when he's not already playing with The Killin' Time Band (check out their duo tonight at Fionn MacCool's on Fairview Street). Turns out he's a really cool guy and he fits right in with our crazy crew. When he's not around we're lucky to have Keith, who we're glad has come along for the ride from the Now and Then side. It's been awesome to see the 4-piece take shape.

Early 2017 we realized it was time to consider the future with Now and Then, and that things might be winding down. Having been together for 10 years, it was a difficult decision, but by the summertime we had made the call that people were being called in different directions, and it was time. We had a fantastic year together, and our last public appearance at The Boston Manor in December was an epic and unforgettable night with so many of our friends coming out to see us and lots of guest musicians taking to the stage with us over the course of the night. While you never know what the future holds, the book is closed. It is a bittersweet feeling but the friendships gained and the music don't ever leave you.

Our biggest accomplishment for 2017 would have to be opening at Canada's Largest Ribfest on the Labour Day weekend in Burlington. Spencer Smith Park is such a beautiful spot on the water, and it was truly an honour to be invited to play the main stage. We've got lots of audio and video from that day, so be sure to take a look around our page for some of the highlights!

As you may know from some of my previous posts, Jim and I are always on the lookout for new gear and seeking out the best in technology opportunities for the group. One area that we've always been challenged in is providing good monitoring on stage without killing everyone's ears, or feeding back into the vocal mics. (Read: I need to hear my voice). So we started researching in-ear monitoring technology and mixers that would have the ability to output a custom monitor mix for everyone. It took a little time, research and many trips to see our good friends at Long and McQuade Burlington, but we made some big investments in the gear department. It's somewhat trial and error but it's already paying off - the volume at rehearsals has been greatly reduced and because everything is digital, with the right software we can now record rehearsals off the floor for reference material. Or in some cases, it's a pretty f%ckin' good recording. Check out this Halestorm inspired version of Heathens by 21 Pilots and you'll see what I mean. Feel free to reach out if you want more details on what we're using and I'll send you the info.

I'd say that probably is enough for now. We're keeping pretty busy with rehearsing and playing, and we're always adding new material to the lineup. So, until next time, friends! If you're free tomorrow night, we're at The Queen's Head in Downtown Burlington at about 9:00.

4:42Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/43896682016-09-25T16:36:20-04:002022-01-26T04:40:20-05:00How far we've come!
If you'd asked me this time two years ago what I saw for myself and my family in two year's time, I don't think I could have imagined that this would be it! A promotion at work, Eric and I buying our home, and the music..... Oh the music!!

I envisioned that Now and Then would be carrying on, doing what we do, but there was part of me that was wanting to do more, which was just not in the cards for NATB as it was at that time. I knew that I wanted (needed) more from the music, and I thought perhaps a little something on the side would give me what I was looking for. It took a few more months, a couple of nameless gigs and plenty of negotiation with Jim, but Bliss was born.

Bliss is defined as "perfect happiness; great joy". There is no word to better describe how making music makes me feel. It makes the time and effort to make it all happen so very worth it.

Next Saturday night, Bliss will be playing at the Boston Manor, and I couldn't be more excited. The hard work has paid off into opportunities for the remainder of 2016, and into 2017. There's lots of people I have to thank for their part in making this all line up, and most of them know who they are as I've thanked them before and will probably thank them again... All my bandmates, my parents and siblings, my kids who understand that "singing is just in my bones", and of course Eric - because without his AMAZING support at home, I couldn't do any this.

Two years later and here we are with the little side project - I cannot wait to see what's coming next!
Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/42621352016-07-01T10:00:00-04:002022-05-11T13:50:55-04:00Random thoughts and musings...Well I know it has been way too long. I'm not one for excuses, but allow me to kindly explain...

I'm sure I can speak for my bandmates when I say, it would be wonderful if making music was all we had to do to keep food on the table and the kids in daycare... In the real world though, I am an Operations Controller, Brian is in the Education industry and Jim is in Sales. In December, I accepted an internal promotion moving me from the Accounting team to the Operations team, where I now manage a team and have been tasked with getting our costs in order. In short: I've been very busy. So while I have made time for the music, I have failed in keeping our blog and website up to date with the latest and greatest.

For instance, Bliss was honoured to be a part of a fundraiser in May for a very worthwhile cause, supporting the Red Cross and the efforts in Ft. McMurray, Alberta. Eight bands were asked to appear, and played at the Boston Manor to help raise funds. We raised $3,200, which was later matched by other initiatives. It was a great opportunity to meet other local musicians, and to see each other perform, which doesn't happen to often since we all gig many Friday and Saturday nights.

We've also been asked to return to the George Hamilton for a monthly time slot, which is fantastic news for our Hamilton fans. I was also excited to learn that Halestorm is returning to Toronto this October... yes I know, I know... But they're so awesome! There has been a lot of new music on the agenda for both the 3 and 4-piece Bliss ensembles, and two weddings coming up towards the end of the year. We've been blessed to share our gifts with you so far this year, and I know the second half of 2016 is only going to be better!

I'll leave you with this: Brian sent me a random text message last Sunday, asking me for three word song titles. I sent him over four or five. There's definitely something in there. Songwriting is a whole new ballgame for me... and needs a post all its own! Until then my friends... Happy Canada Day, Happy 4th of July... and have a great week!
Sarah ♫
Bliss - Voice
Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/39148622015-11-05T09:18:13-05:002022-05-02T03:30:43-04:00I think Jim got Bit!When I first told Jim I had tickets to see Halestorm and I wanted him to come with me, I had visions of dragging him to Hamilton Place kicking and screaming. I came up with several sales pitches before I broached the idea. I was pleased when I didn't have to use any of them, and he agreed to come along. He clearly didn't have the same level of enthusiasm for the event as I did (how could he match that, really!) but he seemed to open up to listening to some of their music.

And then, suddenly... BAM! Sarah might be onto something with this Halestorm business... Jim's downloading tracks and is talking about them too. If you're all still missing the plot, you need to check them out... I've only been talking about it for, like, EVER!

So last night, Jim and I head out to see Halestorm in Hamilton. They opened for 3 Days Grace, which is a shame because I would love to see them headline a show on this side of the ocean - the 45-60 minutes isn't enough for me! The energy was amazing and drummer Arejay was highly entertaining as usual - check this old clip out for a sample.

All in all, a very good night. Being a part of live music as a spectator is incredibly inspiring. My only regret? Booking a back to back weekend for Bliss this Friday and Saturday meant I couldn't scream along. I know I won't get much argument from my fellow musicians that splurging on new gear can be an exciting time, and it is also an investment in your future. The problem only becomes a problem when you start spending more time at your local Long & McQuade than you do at home...

Over the years I've made some acquisitions to support my musical endeavours; microphones, cables, stands, wireless microphones, electronic drum pad, percussion items, guitars, keyboards... This year with the addition of Bliss to my musical arsenal, I've felt the need to expand my gear circle to allow for a more established practice location and for more a more lightweight PA. It's been a little bit crazy, I'm not going to lie. Every time I came home from the music store, Eric would look in the back to see if there were any large packages before breathing a sigh of relief that I only needed a cable.

Being married to a mechanic, I know it is best to get the right tool for the job. Finding the right tool is half the fun, and half the battle. I've learned a lot researching the different options for my musical adventures, and am pretty pleased with the results I've been able to come up with over the last six months. I can get Bliss set up to go for a rehearsal at my place in about a half an hour, and for a gig in about an hour with the gents' assistance. And when I need to take a break from visiting L&M so I don't spend too much more money, I let Jim take over with rearranging his pedal boards. He even got a pedal-cure in September, so I just had to get one to match!

I thought with Halloween around the corner the Frankenstrat pedal/nail combo was entirely appropriate.

He mentioned yesterday that he's done with his pedals again... for now. I wrote a little about her earlier this year, and have been fortunate enough to see Halestorm live twice this year. I may or may not be going to see them again in November when they come to Hamilton Place with Three Day's Grace... Another story for another day...

From time to time, I find myself second guessing the choices I make, and pondering over decisions for too long. This blog post, for example? I've written and re-written a number of times over the last couple of weeks. Why? Because I think too much about how other people will read it, or not read it, whether they'll agree or disagree with my point of view or content. But at the end of the day it is my blog, I'll write what I want to!

On one occasion, I was waffling on whether to change a choice I had made to go with the flow of other people. I really wanted to just do my thing though. Jim says to me, "What would Lzzy Hale do, Sarah? What would Lzzy do?".

Well I will tell you what Lzzy would do - she'd wear the jeans not the dress, if that's what she wanted! She'd wear heels not flats, if that's what she wanted. And she would own it, and kick ass in the way only Lzzy Hale can. In the last couple of months, she started writing a blog of sorts - you can see it here, The Diary of Lzzy Hale. Her post from a few days ago was exactly what I needed to read. "Self-realization, is scary. Taking ownership of one’s self, is hard....

“Am I brave enough? Am I strong enough,
To follow the desire, that burns from within?"

So while the title of this post is "What Would Lzzy Do?", maybe it should be "What Would Sarah Do?". I wanted to start Bliss because I felt a passion that wasn't being ignited through any other channel in my life, and I couldn't just let it pass me by without at least exploring it. If you told the Sarah from ten years ago, that this was what she would be doing, she would laugh it off and continue on her way. I may not be Lzzy Hale, but I don't need to be! I just need to be ME.

Sarah ♫
Bliss - VoiceBlisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/38631352015-09-07T13:50:00-04:002021-11-21T12:47:02-05:00Ribfest: A Day to RememberIt was beautiful Saturday… The sky was clear and blue, the sun was shining; six friends gathered together, not unlike many other Saturdays they’d spent together over the years.

But this one was a little bit different. I haven't called. I haven't stopped by unexpectedly just to say hello. It's actually quite terrible. I can't believe it has been over a month since my last post! I promise I'll do better, I really will.

In honesty, things were fairly quiet for Bliss over the last month or so. Vacations and the dog days of summer meant less practice time for our little group. We did add a few dates to our calendar though, so be sure to have a glance our Live Events.

I was also lucky enough to spend a few days in sunny California for work training last week, which is another reason things were so quiet. While I was stuck inside learning about advanced document management administration for 8 hours a day, I did manage to sneak in some lunchtime rays and splurged on an upgraded rental so I could travel in style (read: 2015 Mustang Convertible). I even managed to squeeze in an evening at Laguna Beach with a few of the other attendees.

But home sweet home always calls to me, and we are right back in the swing of things getting ready for September gigs. We've added some Sia, BNL and a new Adele song to the roster for Bliss. Now and Then has a pretty busy few months ahead, and things are just starting to pick up for Bliss which is good because anyone who knows me, knows that I get antsy if I don't get to perform for too long. No one likes grumpy Sarah...

I hope you're all enjoying the end of summer, and that I'll see you all very soon. So we had Lattes on a Sunday Afternoon. Well, I suppose that would be Latte singular. Brian had an Earl Grey and Jim likes his bold roast. But in any case, it was great to get the three of us together this past Sunday to work on some new material. It had been far too long since we played together, and I'm happy to say we have four new pieces well underway. Although only one of them was my selection, sometimes I just have to go with the flow. This is definitely outside the box for me!

Can I just say, I never thought I would sing anything by Stevie Wonder? Sometimes I hear the "ping" of the Bliss email come in and I think to myself, "What hair brained idea has Brian got now?". Some days there seems to be a steady stream of emails with ideas for new material. The latest one though, was followed up with a recording - Brian had decided to go ahead and learn the piece. This does happen - one or two of us goes ahead on a leap of faith and learns the piece in hopes that the others will come along for the ride. I'd heard the song before, but it definitely wasn't something I knew off the top of my head. And definitely wasn't something I ever envisioned myself performing. I'm curious to see how it all pulls together. Once we've got something more polished I'll have to post it for some feedback.

Hope you've all had a great Monday and that we see each other soon. Our live dates have been updated, and a couple of scheduling changes may mean we can squeeze a few more in before the end of the year.

Until next time, my friends!

Sarah ♫
Bliss - Voice
Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/37759402015-07-13T14:27:32-04:002015-07-13T14:31:24-04:00Band on the MoveThere are so many things I love about Bliss. I was drinking my Starbucks on the way to work this morning, and realized that I was so behind with Bliss. It's been a very busy month for me personally, and I have a lot to follow up on. My mind started to wander and I contemplated the things I love about this little trio with an often big sound. Musical bits aside...

Here is my "5 Things I Love About Bliss"

We are like family. My two bandmates are like the older brothers I never had (wanted?). Brian and Jim make me laugh until my sides ache, and also tease me relentlessly when they deem it appropriate. About anything, in case you're wondering. My new tattoo. My parenting methods. My terrible flute playing attempts during practice. My new shoes. I digress...

Family comes first. While we are like a family, it is always understood that we have to take care of our home lives and the gents are always so understanding when the kids make me late, or if Eric has something on the go. It is nice to work with like minded people, however eager we may be at times to play.

We can practice anywhere. We travel fairly light, so it isn't too hard to bring your own gear to use. But in addition, the option is there for us to practice at any one of our three houses, because we all have access to a guitar and a set of keys.

Okay, I can't help it one of the items has to be about the musical bits... Brian and Jim are pretty frickin' awesome at what they do. I love the sound that they can help create with just our little ensemble, and the fact that they'll try anything to see if it works. It allows me to be somewhat self indulgent in my song selection...

All this musical talent crammed onto one street! Brian and Jim are next door neighbours, and it is 210 steps from my front door to Brian's. Impromptu practice? Okay! Let me walk down the street... Never mind the convenience of it, I always found it to be one of the coolest things about us. If I hadn't moved to ForestHOOD, who knows if Bliss would ever have come to be?

All of this brings me to the sad news. I mentioned I've been behind on Bliss things. I've especially been slacking in the blog post department, mostly due to the fact that my husband and I....

...drumroll please...

...shit we don't have a drummer...

...and no I'm not pregnant...

BOUGHT A HOUSE!... but it isn't in ForestHOOD. And it has been a very busy month for us between moving and renovations to the new place. Raise a glass and shed a tear, the Nolte's have moved Downtown. Now don't panic, it is a ten minute drive away. And I've been assured that I will always have honourary ForestHOOD membership. But the days of throwing on a hoodie and wandering down the street at 9PM in February are a thing of the past. There is, however, plenty of music still to come!

If you need a musical fix, Now and Then is playing at Pub Fiction in Ancaster this Friday, July 17, 2015. Three months ago, Bliss became Bliss and I started filling your newsfeeds and inboxes with updates on our little project. It has been intense but oh so worth it! How did we get here? Well, pull up a chair, my friends... here's a story for you;

Once upon a time, on a cold winter day, Brian, Jim and Sarah start jammin' out tunes in the ForestHood Basement Lounge. Having been invited to play a set at The Winter Onesy Pajama Party for Cancer, they needed to come up with a few tunes and a name to promote their appearance. The music came easily; the name, however, was a mystery.

The search began. Many options were presented... just as many were shot down. Sarah learned the meaning of G*sh Tape... She became good friends with her thesaurus and dictionary. The resident Doctor had some interesting musical terms that were considered but nothing really fit - let's face it, who knows what 'Tierce de Picardie' means? Stray Pussy and the Ball Room got many laughs but not as many votes. Tempest in a Teacup was interesting but didn't really fit. Sweet Escape was considered too "girly" for the men in the group.

Late one March night, over a cup of tea and book, Sarah was explaining to a friend the struggles of finding a name... the music was coming along, but without a name they couldn't begin to start promoting the group. She wanted something that expressed how making music made her feel... how important it was to her and how it was her escape from the world... Music made her heart happy and she wanted to share it... It was a Eureka moment. One word came back in reply... and Bliss was born.

Of course, I had to sell it to Brian and Jim afterwards... there was hesitation and a little bit of push back, but when you believe in your product, and in yourself it makes it much easier to sell it. When it comes from an honest place I think people can sense that. So I sold it to Jim. I think Jim told Brian not to bother trying to fight me on it because I was determined that it was going to happen.

So, what's in a name? When it comes to roses they'd still smell just as sweet. But I can't think of another word that better describes one. Just as I couldn't think of a better way to describe how sharing my music makes me feel. I truly feel at my best when I get the opportunity to perform for people. It is like magic.

It's Bliss.

Sarah ♫
Bliss - VoiceBlisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/37121552015-05-25T09:12:39-04:002022-06-01T14:27:01-04:00Congratulations to the Bride and Groom!
A very big congratulations this fine Monday to our Bride and Groom on the celebration of their marriage this past Saturday!

Bliss was honoured to be a part of this very intimate and exciting occasion at the Edgewater Manor in Stoney Creek. It's Madness! This week we finished working on two more songs. These ones were tough ones for me! I've learned a few things about recording this go around as well as a few things about playing in a smaller ensemble...

First, the live performance aspect; we definitely feed off each other's energy, and in turn we (hopefully) pass that on to our audience. Things are fluid and while not necessarily perfect, the moment passes and the "oops" is gone, hopefully never to be heard from again. I have found though that in the smaller group there's less to hide behind and the mistakes are much more noticeable... so it pushes me to be a better musician, to work a little harder.

Second, in regards to recording; it is so interesting to listen to the work you've just done, critique it, rework it, and move on. It is also interesting to have others critique your work for you to help you make it better. When you've been singing a song for years, it can be especially difficult to step back from it and really listen to it... in fact, sometimes I just can't do it. Brian and Jim are good for this, as they question why I'm doing something a certain way, or ask me to try it a little bit differently. A couple of friends are also pretty awesome in this regard, they tell me like it is especially when I've listened to it so many times I can't even hear the song anymore. All these things help me to test the limits and grow as a musician.

Third, in regards to promoting; it is really hard to get people to talk to you! People are busy... owners of bars, clubs, cafes are usually busy people. And if the answer is no, you seldom hear anything back from them at all. But most places want you to drop off a card and they'll call you if interested. Some said I can follow up by email. Live music is, well, LIVE! I want to talk to you LIVE and in person... So don't be surprised when I come back again... and again... and again ;)

Hope everyone has had a fabulous week and you enjoy the weekend. Happy Easter!

Sarah ♫
Bliss - Voice

Blisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/36337112015-03-31T09:01:48-04:002022-01-15T08:47:58-05:00My flute hasn't seen this much action in years...
I started playing the flute in the ninth grade, when I took a general music class and we all had to choose an instrument. At the time, it made sense to me to take something that was easy to transport back and forth to school, and I loved the way it sounded. Turns out I had a bit of a knack for it, at least at the high school level. I convinced my mom to let me rent one for the summer, and when the school year started up again for the tenth grade, I made the argument that the instruments at the school were crap (was the truth) and a good player could struggle with a shoddy instrument. Lakeshore Music had a rent-to-own program, so mom agreed and we kept her so that I always had my own reliable instrument to play. By the time I graduated high school, she was mine. I played at church on occasion, and when Now and Then started up, I played on one or two songs, but nothing serious.

She spend most of her days in a cool, dry place in a dark box. A velvety lined box, but not a lot of daylight for my baby. The box would poke out of the bookshelf just a bit, a reminder of the fact that I clearly didn't have the passion for her that I used to, that I didn't see her as a part of me any more. I contemplated selling her; after all, it had been years since I played her every day, or even once a week for that matter. But she was mine and she didn't owe me anything, but I owed her something.

Eventually she moved off the bookshelf and into a storage box to be moved. And she stayed there, out of sight and out of mind.

One of the things I have come to love about working with Brian and Jim is that they encourage me to try new things, to push myself, and to experiment with my instruments. Building arrangements of songs usually performed by a full band with just the three of us can be an interesting process at times, so when we were working on Madness (Muse) and something just felt like it was missing, Jim suggested "Why don't you play your flute, Sarah!!??". Now, his commentary was designed to jab a little, as it's been a long standing fact that I won't just pull her out and play her anywhere. The rest of the Now and Then crew have been bugging me for years to play more, but I've always been afraid I wouldn't do it right, or that I would sound like an amateur amongst the amazing musicians I play with. This time though... I thought why the hell not.

Just because they encourage me, however, doesn't mean they hesitate to tell me when something sounds sour. This happens more than I'd like to admit, but we've spent so long apart, she and I... We need to find our groove again so we can make beautiful music together. And we will.

Sarah ♫
Bliss - VoiceBlisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/36272392015-03-27T11:15:17-04:002023-01-12T02:36:28-05:00Many Sources of Inspiration
While I was in the UK earlier this month, I had the opportunity to see Halestorm, a band from PA fronted by Lzzy Hale. I find that musical inspiration comes from all over the place, but this girl is something else. Short story time...

Last year a good friend of mine flipped me a link to Lindsey Stirling's song Shatter Me. I'd heard some of Lindsey's other work before, including a beautiful duet with John Legend on his piece, All of Me. Shatter Me was very different though, and features Lzzy Hale's vocal. Not sure what it was, but something about her voice caught me off guard and I wanted... no, NEEDED to hear more! A quick Google search and I was immersed in YouTube videos for 3 hours... live performances, covers, original material... I couldn't get enough of it. This girl can sing, no doubt. And she plays the guitar... and some piano. In short? She rocks. I knew I had to see her live, so when Halestorm happened to be playing in Wolverhampton at the same time as my planned trip to our UK office, I took the opportunity to go.

The show was amazing, and I was definitely not disappointed. I also got to do a meet and greet before the show...
It was a pretty cool experience and the best part is, I'll probably get to see them play again on this side of the Atlantic!

In closing, I'm lucky to have people in my life who not only know my musical tastes and share these little gems with me, but also challenge my comfort zone and introduce me to new things on an ongoing basis. Bliss has done a cover of Break In - I'm no Lzzy, but I love the song and am glad to have the opportunity to cover it. Last night we worked on two tracks that we hadn't planned for, and ended up with a half decent result. It isn't quite ready to share yet but I promise once it is, you'll find it here.

I can appreciate all the hard work that goes into this process, but it is a heck of a lot of fun and there's always a few laughs.

Keep smiling :)

Sarah ♫
Bliss - VoiceBlisstag:blissmusic.ca,2005:Post/36140472015-03-20T15:13:50-04:002022-05-25T05:13:14-04:00Work to be done...After I was away for a week for business in the UK, we are back at it! I posted a new tune today (which you should see here somewhere) for you all to have a listen to - let us know what you think!

We are working on more so be sure to check back in regularly. Look to see live performance dates for May and June in the coming weeks as well. Can't wait to break out of winter and get back to making music...

Sarah ♫
Bliss - VoiceBliss
